Why I Became a Wedding Planner

Whenever I meet clients for the first time, and they’re getting to know me, they always ask me why I became a wedding planner. Of course, depending on how much time they have, there’s always a short answer and a long answer. The short version is always “how could someone not want to watch two people who love each other make that commitment together in front of all of their family and friends?” The long version? Well, that’s what today’s blog is all about! This is why I became a wedding planner!

You all know the story of how I became an event planner, but in case you don’t, here’s the quick version: I went to school for Public Relations, fell in love with event planning, and after some personal tragedy, I started my own business, and haven’t looked back.

The long version? Well, I went to school for Public Relations, but it just didn’t click with me in what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Of course, I wasn’t going to just drop it, so I stuck it out until I figured out what I could do next. Luckily I did, too, because one of the classes was based on planning a three-day art show. From there, I just knew I loved planning events!

Once I graduated, I wasn’t ready to start my own business, and I was working full time, so with every free minute I had, I was volunteering at every event and for every business I could get my hands on. I was in heaven.

In October 2012, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer. She was always the person to push me to do what I loved, but I wanted to spend all my free time with her instead of volunteering. I knew she didn’t have much time, and I wanted to make the most of the little time I had with her.

My mother-in-law passed away in February 2014, less than two years after her diagnosis. We were crushed, but I knew I had to do something that would help her memory and life live on in something I did. After having lengthy conversations with my husband, I decided that it was time for me to start my own business. In November 2014, my business was born, and I’ve been doing what I love ever since.

As much as I love the corporate aspect of event planning, it doesn’t have that personal touch that wedding planning does. With corporate events, you get to know the corporate client very well as you plan and navigate the event, but with wedding planning, not only do you get to know your couple very well, but you also get to know their close family and friends. Plus, and this is truly my favourite part, you get to see an abundance of true love and romance surrounding you and this beautiful couple. No matter what is happening in your life, that is a beautiful thing to be able to witness on a daily basis. Who would want to give that up?

So although I love the corporate side of event planning, my true passion is the wedding planning side. The love, the romance, the surprises… it’s all just the best feeling in the world! And I truly believe that doing what I love, following my heart, and putting all my passion into my business is a great way to honour my mother-in-law.
